About Sorrel & Salt
Who writes these recipes, how they are tested, and what we will not publish.

What this site is
Sorrel & Salt is a small, independent recipe publication run from a home kitchen in the United States. We write about open-pollinated vegetables, fruit and herbs from a cook's point of view: which varieties are worth the garden space, when they are ready to pick, and how to cook them so that what made them special on the vine survives the pan.
The site launched in 2023. It is independently owned and edited. There is no sponsored recipe programme, no paid product placement and no ghostwritten content presented as first-hand cooking. Every page carries a publication or update date so you can see how current it is.
Who writes this site
Dana Whitfield is the Founding editor & recipe developer. Dana Whitfield develops and tests the recipes, writes the growing notes, maintains the photograph credit register and answers reader corrections. The editorial workload is deliberately small: one editor, a fixed recipe collection, and no anonymous contributors.
You can reach the editor directly at hello@supermarketcc.store. We do not use a call centre or a shared content inbox.
What we publish
- Seasonal recipes for open-pollinated vegetables, fruit and herbs, written for ordinary home kitchens.
- Practical growing and harvesting notes for the varieties used in those recipes.
- Preserving and condiment recipes that follow published food-safety guidance.
- Short, factual explanations of ingredients, equipment and technique — never medical, nutritional or dietary advice.
Editorial standards
These are the rules we hold ourselves to. If you find a page that breaks one of them, write to hello@supermarketcc.store with the page URL and we will correct it.
- We cook everything first. A recipe is only published after it has been made at least twice, at home, with ordinary equipment, and written up from notes rather than from memory.
- We describe what actually happens. If a technique is fussy, we say so. If a shortcut works as well, we give it.
- We name our sources. Variety and growing information comes from seed catalogues, university extension publications and growers. We do not take payment to recommend a variety, a brand or a product.
- We separate facts from opinion. Where food safety is involved — canning, preserving, foraging — we follow published USDA and Cooperative Extension guidance and link to it rather than inventing our own numbers.
- We correct errors in the open. A corrected page gets a new date and a short note describing what changed. The full process is set out in our editorial policy.
- We write for American kitchens. Measurements are given in US cups, tablespoons, ounces and degrees Fahrenheit, with metric equivalents for readers elsewhere.
What we do not publish
- Sponsored recipes, paid product reviews, affiliate links or undisclosed advertising.
- Guest posts, link insertions or content written to promote a seed company, cookware brand or retailer.
- Medical, nutritional, allergenic or dietary advice, or calculated nutrition figures presented as clinical fact.
- Photographs we cannot licence and credit, or images presented as our own when they are not.
How the photography works
We cannot photograph every dish ourselves, so the finished-dish photographs on this site are freely licensed images from Wikimedia Commons, used under the terms of their licences. Every photograph carries its author, licence and source link directly beneath it, and the full register is on the image credits page. We do not use AI-generated food photography. If you are a rights holder and want a photograph removed or re-credited, email us and we will act the same day.
Ownership and funding
Sorrel & Salt is independently owned and operated. It is not owned by an advertising network, seed company, grocery retailer or cookware manufacturer. The site is funded by display advertising. Ads are served by third-party networks, may be personalised using cookies, and are never placed inside recipe instructions or made to look like editorial content. Non-essential advertising cookies are only set after you accept the cookie banner, and you can change that choice at any time with the Cookie settings link.
Advertisers do not see articles before publication, do not approve copy, and cannot buy a place in a recipe, a recommendation or a growing note. See our privacy policy for how advertising affects your data and how to opt out of personalised advertising.
Corrections and updates

We aim to reply within two business days. Substantive corrections are noted on the page with a new update date; the editorial policy explains what counts as a substantive change.
